Emerging young leaders shine in industry award

  • Grand finalists of the prestigious ALFA Young Lot Feeder of the Year Award have been announced.

  • Lot feeding sector retains strong emerging leadership despite trying times.

  • Overall winner to be announced at ALFA’s 50th Anniversary morning tea on 18th December.

Three young people from across Australia have been named grand finalists in the Australian Lot Feeders’ Association (ALFA) Young Lot Feeder of the Year Award, proudly sponsored by Performance Feeds.

The award embodies passion, leadership, development and initiative and encourages emerging, dedicated employees to contribute their ideas and vision for lot feeding at a national level. Entrants are required to submit a compelling essay on a real or perceived industry issue discussing its implications to the feedlot industry and explore a proposed solution to be successful in the award. They also must demonstrate their leadership potential through a defined set criteria.

From an original pool of 13 entries, six progressed to the second judging round where they undertook a formal interview with the judging panel, followed by presenting to the ALFA Council on their essay topic.

Volunteering on this year’s judging panel are highly regarded leaders in the lot feeding industry and past award winners, Matt Luhrs (2009 winner) and Geoff Cornford (2004 winner), alongside Scott Sloss from Performance Feeds.

ALFA President, Bryce Camm, said that the award has been invaluable in discovering and encouraging some of the industry’s greatest new talent.

“Given the current challenges we are all facing, we were extremely impressed by the resilience and confidence all the entrants demonstrated in their entries this year,” said Mr Camm.

“Uncovering and meeting these impressive young leaders has given the ALFA Council great confidence in the future of our industry.”

The award has a long and proud history of unearthing talent that have gone on to be industry leaders, including Grant Garey (2000 Winner) and Stephen Martin (2013 Winner), both of whom sit on the ALFA Council and participate in industry committees.

The Grand Finalists in the ALFA Young Lot Feeder of the Year Award 2020 (in alphabetical order) are:

  • Kailen Hodgson, Teys Australia – Charlton Feedlot VIC

  • Louise Rush, Iranda Beef SA

  • Molly Sage, JBS Australia – Beef City Qld

From here, the final three will be asked to further explore their industry topic and present their findings to a national feedlot audience during the formal proceedings of ALFA’s 50th Anniversary morning tea event on 18 December 2020. The overall winner will be announced at the conclusion of the event.
