ALFA welcomes new and re-elected board directors while recognising contributions of retiring directors, at recent AGM.
The Association reaffirms its commitment to advocacy, sustainability, and best practices for the feedlot industry.
Grant Garey was elected as the 18th ALFA President, with Tom Green as Vice President, bringing new leadership to the board.
The Australian Lot Feeders’ Association (ALFA) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday 12 November 2024, with outgoing President, Barb Madden, welcoming members and providing an overview of the Association’s activities over the past year.
During the AGM, held in person in Brisbane, ALFA confirmed the election of new Board Directors alongside re-elected Directors:
Andrew Talbot, Elders' - Killara Feedlot (re-elected)
Barb Madden, Smithfield Cattle Company – Sapphire Feedlot (re-elected)
Brad Robinson, Mort & Co Lot Feeders - Grassdale Feedlot (new)
David Bailey, Australian Country Choice – Opal Creek Feedlot (re-elected)
Grant Garey, Teys Australia Pty Ltd – Jindalee Feedlot (re-elected)
Board Directors who retired or did not nominate for re-election, included:
Andrew Rushford
Lauren McNally
Lucy Morris
Scott Braund
In her address to AGM attendees, Mrs Madden expressed the Association’s gratitude to the retiring Board Directors for their service over the past year.
“On behalf of ALFA members and the Board, we extend our gratitude to Andrew, Scott, Lucy, and Lauren for their generous contributions to ALFA, and we wish them well in the future,” Mrs Madden said.
Mrs Madden also reflected on ALFA’s impact as the recognised representative body for Australian Lot Feeders, now in its 54th year. Following the introduction of a new constitution at the previous AGM, the Association has been implementing modernising changes, strengthening its role and effectiveness.
As reported in ALFA’s Annual Report, Year in Review 2024, Mrs Madden highlighted key achievements against ALFA’s strategic objectives, which serve close to 90% of Australia’s cattle feedlot capacity.
“Under our new constitution, we’ve enhanced our capacity to support a profitable and sustainable feedlot industry through focused advocacy and essential services for our members,” Mrs Madden noted.
Mrs Madden reiterated the advancement of industry under ALFA’s Shade Initiative, an industry best practice effort that aims to encourage all feedlots to provide shade or shelter for cattle by 2026.
“Above all, as lot feeders, we remain committed to nurturing cattle, land, and community in everything we do,” Mrs Madden concluded.
In closing, Mrs Madden welcomed re-elected Board Directors and thanked retiring Directors for their contributions to the Association and the broader industry.
The following day, in line with ALFA’s constitution, the newly elected Board convened in Brisbane and appointed Grant Garey as ALFA President and Tom Green as Vice President, marking a new leadership chapter as Mrs Madden’s three-year term concluded and she opted not to renominate.
The 18th President, Grant Garey, is the General Manager of Feedlots for Teys Australia and has been deeply involved with ALFA for almost 20 years.
After completing a Bachelor of Rural Science at the University of New England, Mr Garey began his career in lot feeding in 1995 at Sandalwood Feedlot, before moving to Teys’ Jindalee Feedlot in 2002. He won the prestigious ALFA Young Lot Feeder achiever award in 2001.
Serving as an ALFA Director since 2005, Mr Garey has held various positions within the organisation including Chair of the R&D, Events, and Marketing Committees, as well as Vice President and Chair of the ALFA Audit, Risk & Remuneration Committee.
Mr Garey said he is honoured to take on the President’s role and focus on continuing to grow ALFA’s position as the leading voice in the cattle feedlot industry, advocating for our members, and promoting best practices.
Vice President Tom Green entered the feedlot industry in 2012 and has built a successful career working within vertically integrated beef businesses.
Following 7 years working with Thomas Foods International overseeing their lot feeding enterprise, he commenced a new role with Camm Agriculture Group as General Manager in early 2024.
Mr Green was named the ALFA Young Lot Feeder of the Year in 2017 and received a Nuffield Scholarship in 2019, before joining the ALFA Board in 2020. Combining this experience with being raised on the land and having a practical approach has resulted in his strong passion for food production, sustainability, business, emerging technologies and finance.
Equipped with a team of widely experienced industry leaders, ALFA is looking forward to delivering for our members under Mr Garey and the ALFA Board’s leadership.
